After Texas gained its independence, Houston was elected as the first president of the Republic of Texas, serving from 1836 to 1838 and again from 1841 to 1844. He was instrumental in securing recognition of Texas as an independent nation by the United States and other countries. In 1845, Texas was annexed by the United States, and Houston was elected as one of the state’s first two senators.
